Please follow the packing guidelines on the website at “Packing Guidelines”
Please review the packing guidelines on the website.  We know the bucket lids are too tight. We will remedy this at the Tuesday night drop off.

Don’t forget to bring a rain poncho!
A rain Poncho  is on the list.  It is important.  Trekking while you are wet is no fun!!

On Wednesday morning, you will meet your pioneer families,  have a short devotional,  use the restrooms, load the busses, and leave promptly.  150 people are going on trek and we have chartered buses with a time schedule.  We won’t be able to wait for late arrivals or special circumstances.  Our first restroom stop is 3 to 4 hours later at Craig, Co.  Plan accordingly.

Wear your first set of pioneer clothes Wednesday morning.
Come dressed in your pioneer clothes on Wednesday morning.  You must travel in your pioneer clothes. There will be no time to change clothes at the Stake Center or even later that day.  Also, you will not have access to your buckets or duffel bags Wednesday morning as they will have already been packed in the vehicles.

Bring a sack lunch on the bus
Bring a sack lunch with you on the bus.   Water will be provided on the bus. Don’t pack your lunch in  your bucket.  Again, you will not have access to your buckets or gear until Wednesday evening.  Please no coolers.  Disposable  lunch items only.    Please be aware there are no garbage facilities at Martins Cove/ Willie Center.  Whatever garbage we create during our trip we/you will be bringing back to Grand Junction with us/you.  So be considerate.

Welcome to the 2012 Grand Junction Stake Pioneer Trek Website! This website is the main communication tool for youth, parents, Stake leaders, and Ward leaders in our preparation to attend Pioneer Trek. This website should answer all your questions. Please review this website so you will be prepared for Trek!  (This is not an "official" website of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - Please see disclaimer note below.)

The Pioneer Trek will be held August 8 - August 11, 2012. The Pioneer Trek is a opportunity for the youth to experience in small measure what the emigrating pioneers experienced as they struggled to survive the early Wyoming winter in 1856. The youth will have the opportunity to draw parallels to their own lives as they consider the trials of these early devoted pioneers.

Youth will be grouped in "pioneer families" of approximately 8 youth per family.
Each family will pull their handcart through Martins Cove, across the Sweat water River, up Rocky Ridge, and into Rock Creek Hollow ( approximately 21 miles over two days). The families will trek together as a company of handcart families lead and assisted by other Stake leaders (including medical support). Each family is lead by an adult married couple (ma and pa) who has been carefully selected by Stake leaders through inspiration to lead the family on their pioneer journey. Family members will be kept together as unit throughout all activities on the trek experience. Sleeping arrangements are by family with young men of the same family sleeping together in one tent and young women of the family sleeping together in another tent.

Additional activities include firesides, devotionals, square dancing, pioneer games, and testimony meetings. All trekkers will be required to bring two sets of "pioneer clothes." (See Clothing Tab) Pioneer clothes must be worn at all times from boarding the bus to returning home, with the exception of appropriate nighttime clothes (sweats recommended). All trekkers will be required to bring a specific list of items with them to trek. (See What to Bring Tab) All of your items must fit in both the five gallon bucket AND duffel bag (provided by the stake on July 28th) All food and meals, including trail snacks, will be provided by the Stake with one exception; All participants must bring a sack lunch for Wednesday August 8th to eat on the bus en route to Martins Cove.

Youth are also encouraged to bring a "pioneer name" and associated pioneer story with them to Trek and be prepared to share their story with others. Ward leaders have been asked to help youth find pioneer names and stories. Youth that do not have a pioneer name and story will be be provided one on August 8th.

To enhance the spiritual nature of this event, no electronic devices are to be brought on the Trek by youth participants. (No ipods, cell phones, I pads etc.) Any such devices discovered will be taken and returned at the end of trek.

Those wishing to bring a camera must bring a dedicated point and shoot camera (not a cell phone). A dedicated stake photographer is assigned to document the experience. These photos and videos will be provided o all participants after the event.

P
arents will be provided with emergency contact phone numbers to contact Stake leaders, Martins Cove (1-307-328-2953), or Willie Center ( 1-307-544-2370). There is limited to no cell phone range on the trekking route.

Buses will be used to transport youth to Martins Cove and back to Grand Junction.
Medial personnel will accompany the trekkers. Medical histories and medical releases for each participant must be obtained by Sunday July 1st. Youth will special diet, medical, or emotional considerations should be brought to the attention of President Weaver or Sister Leavitt by May 6th.

Physical preparation is an important part of preparing for Pioneer Trek. The pioneers planned and prepared extensively before they began their journey. Similarly , all participants should prepare physically before the event. All trekkers (both youth and adults) will be required to meet the physical fitness requirements outlined as follows:

“Each participant (both leaders and youth) should condition themselves physically for this experience. Specifically, each participant should be able to complete a minimum requirement of walking/running four (4) miles on level ground in 60 minutes or less with no undo stress.” (“Handbook for Trek Leaders” p.6 published by the Church).

Ward youth leaders have been asked to help the youth in their ward prepare and meet this physical fitness requirement. Parents and leaders of youth who can't meet this requirement should be brought to the attention of Pres. Weaver or Sister Leavitt, well in advance of trek.

The Pioneer Trek is for the youth of the Grand Junction Stake. Youth must be 12 to 18 years old as of August 8, 2012 to participate. (For example if you are 12 years old on August 8th you may come. If you turn 19 on August 8th unfortunately you will not be able to attend without a specific invitation from the Stake Leaders.)
