Questions (FAQ)

Pioneer Trek Frequently Asked Questions

What age do you need to be to go on the Trek?
o      Pioneer Trek is for the youth of the Grand Junction Stake.  You must be 12 to 18 years old as of August 8, 2012.  For example if you turn 12 on August 8th you may come.  If you turn 19 on August 8th unfortunately you will not be able to attend without a specific invitation from the Stake.
Can I invite my friends to come? Can my family come?
o      The Trek is for all the youth members of the Grand Junction Stake.  All others, both youth and adult, only by permission of Stake Leaders.
vWhat are the physical fitness requirements to be able to participate in the Trek?
o      The pioneers planned and prepared extensively before they began their journey.  Similarly, all participants in trek should prepare physically for the event.  “Each participant (both leaders and youth) should condition themselves physically for this experience.  Specifically, each participant should be able to complete a minimum requirement of walking/running four (4) miles on level ground in 60 minutes or less with no undo stress.”  (“Handbook for Trek Leaders” p.6 published by the Church).  We are asking parents and ward leaders to help all youth in their wards prepare physically to be able to meet this requirement.
vCan I bring my cell phone or iPod?
o      No electronic devices such as IPODS or cell phones are allowed on the Trek, even if their intended purpose is to be “used as a camera.”  You will need to bring a dedicated point and shoot camera if you want to bring a camera.
Who do I tell if I have medications, medical conditions, diet restrictions or other special physical or mental needs?
o      Medical Releases and Medical Information sheets will be obtained for each participant. Please let Sister Leavitt or Brother Weaver know in advance if youth in your wards have specific needs.
Can I wear something else other than pioneer clothing?
o      No. Pioneer clothing is an essential part of the Pioneer Trek Experience.  Each youth will bring two sets of pioneer clothing.  Pioneer clothing will be worn on the day we leave, the whole time we are trekking, and on the way back home.  You may wear normal, modest sleepwear while sleeping but all other times you will be in pioneer clothing.  Please see clothing tab for more information on the pioneer clothing you will need.
When is the deadline for commitment to the Trek?
o      For budgeting, planning, and logistic purposes the Stake will require a commitment of all youth wanting to attend Pioneer Trek by May 6th, 2012.
What if I’m too young, too old, or can’t go to Trek at this time?
o      The stake is currently trying to schedule another Pioneer Trek event in either 2016 or 2018. Scheduling Pioneer Treks at Martins Cove/ Willie Center for large stake groups at a predictable time interval is becoming more challenging.  Please be aware that families are welcome to visit Martins Cove and the Willie Center to have their own trek as a family at any time they are open.
How am I traveling to Wyoming?
o      We will be traveling on large 50 person passenger buses.  You will be traveling as families on the buses.
Do I have to have an ancestor name to carry with me?
o      More information on names will be coming from your ward leaders.  If you are unable to locate a name from your family then one will be provided for you.

When will I learn square dancing?
o      Our Stake will be learning how to square dance on July 28th from 7-9pm at the Stake Center.  Pioneer clothing will be required attire at this dance.
v    What else will be happening on July 28th?
o       On July 28 all adult leaders will meet at the STake Center at 6:00 pm for a final meeting.  At 7:00 all those going on Pioneer trek - both youth and adult leaders will meet at the Stake Center at 7:00 pm.  Everyone should come dressed in one of their pioneer outfits.  We will be learning to square dance.  At this time, all participants will need to turn in their medical release forms as well.  All participants be given their 5 gallon buckets and duffel bags. - See the "What You Should Bring Tab"

What do I need to bring on Trek?
o      See the Pioneer Clothing and Equipment List tabs for a complete list of items to bring. Youth and leaders will be very limited in the type and quantity of items they bring.
When will family assignments be made and when will I learn what Ma and Pa I’ve been assigned to.
o      Similar to our Youth Conference in 2011, family group assignments will be made on the day of the event, August 8th.    Stake leaders will seek inspiration in selecting families.  Please don’t make requests regarding family assignments.  Parents or leaders who have legitimate concerns regarding family assignments should make these concerns known to either Sister Leavitt or Bro. Weaver well in advance of Trek.   Also a stake representative will be assigned to each family to assist in the Trekking process.
Will I be able to hang out with my friends on the Trek?
o       For the most part, including the bus ride to and from Wyoming, you will be asked to be with your assigned family.
Do I need to bring any food or snacks?
o      You will be asked to bring a sack lunch for the trip up to Martins Cove on the first day.  All other food and snacks will be provided by the “Rescuers”  - the Trek Food Committee.  Excellent food is planned!
What happens if I get hurt on the Trek?
o      We will have two nurses, one EMT,  other “rescuers” assigned on and off the trail to help all those who might fall ill or get hurt.  Planned water stops and toilet stops ( port-a-potties) are provided periodically along the trail.
What is the general itinerary for the Trek?
Many exciting and spiritual experiences are planned for Pioneer Trek.  See the Itinerary Tab.
